POENARI CITADEL
It seems incredible that during the XIV-th century, on the top of a high mountain, a stone citadel was built in these regions. We believe that the first tower was built by Negru Voda, the legendary founder figure of the first state here. The citadel is historically bound to Vlad Țepeș. He was the one who noticed the strategic value of its location and developed most of what we can see here now.
The round through there is a bit exhausting, 1480 stairs to climb. Bring drinking water with you, you are going to need it! If you are having heart problem, we do not recommend the climb. The area is also populated by wild bears, therefore visiting is accompanied and allowed only two times a day, at 9:00 and 15:00.
The Citadel looks from afar as a high vulture nest, inspiring dreams of the life here several centuries ago. The view is amazing, with a superb panorama over the river Argeș Valley. Take the trip from Hotel Subcarpați to Poenari Citadel and you will not only get spectacular pictures, but also lots of medieval stories to tell your friends and family.
